Northern Territory's best known (and most used) rail trail. There are two sections Darwin (sealed) and Katherine (still more a bushwalk than a developed trail).

Preservation Value

The North Australia Railway (NAR) narrow gauge (1067mm) line ran from Darwin to Birdum. Built as the Palmerston (that is, Darwin) division of the South Australian Railways, it was extended to Emungalan on the Katherine River in May 1917 and eventually to Birdum whilst under Commonwealth Railway control. The last train ran on on 30 June 1976.

Access by Road: Very easy: either from the Stuart Highway in Darwin or Katherine.
