Work on the first 35 kilometre section, from Thames to Paeroa, is to start at the Paeroa end and once it is completed the trail to Waikino will be constructed.

Funding for the cycleway from Waikino to Waihi was signed off as part of the first stage of the trail, though it is not expected to be finished for some time after the rest of the first stage due to design and engineering challenges.

Paeroa–Te Aroha…

A second leg of the trail from Paeroa to Te Aroha, set to cost just under $2m, was also signed off, but this was provisional on Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) contributing funding to the first stage.

A third leg from Kaiaua to Thames, to cost almost $3.5m, was also discussed as a possibility but would be dependent on obtaining funding from sources such as TCDC and the Conservation Department
